FROM THE PASTOR'S DESK

Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

I will give thanks to you, O LORD, with all my heart, for you have heard the words of my mouth.

— Psalm 138:1

Many years ago the great explorer, Sir Francis Drake, was attempting to recruit a number of young men for an upcoming exploration. He gathered them around and told the group that if they came with him they would see some of the most marvelous things their eyes could ever behold. Sandy white beaches, juicy fruits, foreign peoples, priceless treasures, and gorgeous landscapes would they see. And he told them that this wild adventure could be theirs if they came with him. Not one of them enlisted for the journey. The next day a different group came out. Drake told them that if they came with him they would encounter storms that would terrify them to tears. Tiger winds would hammer them and blow them off course for months. Water would frequently be scarce. At times they would be so thirsty that their very souls would cry out for simply one drop of water. In short, their constant companion would be danger. Drake concluded by declaring that if they could handle these things, the joys of exploration would exceed their wildest dreams. Every single one of them in the group joined Sir Francis Drake that day, some did not even go home to say goodbye to their families. They just boarded the boat eager for the journey. What made the difference in these two groups? Why did the first group turn down the mission and the second jump at the chance? Was the second group different and more adventurous than the first? The answer is: No. It is not the men who had changed; it was the message. The first message spoke of rewards; the second spoke of challenges. The first offered comfort; the second promised suffering. The first tempted them with things; the second seduced them with an experience unlike any other.

Is that not what God offers us through our baptism? To come along with Him to experience an adventure like no other is the offering. Are we willing to take it – the suffering and struggle over the comfort and ease?

--- Msgr. Mike

QUESTION OF THE WEEK

Here is our Question of the Week. The encouragement is for everyone to ponder that question or to dialogue in your family prayer time, over this particular question. Begin with prayer and then have someone pose the question. Listen with respect to those who respond and close with another short prayer, perhaps the Lord’s Prayer. This week’s reflection questions are:

  • What do you think God is calling you to do in your life?
  • ¿A qué piensa que lo está llamando Dios que haga en su vida?

SOME GOOD THINGS TO KNOW
...

HOLYDAYS OF OBLIGATION
A reminder: We have five holydays in the United States:
Mary Mother of God: January 1st
Assumption: August 15th
All Saints: November 1st
Immaculate Conception: December 8th
Nativity of Jesus (Christmas): December 25th

Both the Immaculate Conception and Nativity of Jesus ALWAYS ARE HOLYDAYS OF OBLIGATION, regardless on what day they fall. The other three, when they are on either a Saturday or a Monday, the obligation is abrogated. Those of us who recall having six holydays which included the Ascension know that the TX bishops have moved this solemnity to the 7th Sunday of Easter. Questions, call Msgr. Mike.

PLEASE USE YOUR PRE-PRINTED ENVELOPES
Registered members of the parish should be receiving a packet of contribution envelopes every month from St. Matthew. These envelopes have vital information printed on them to assist the staff in accurately posting and subsequently reporting your contributions at the end of the year. We are requesting that all parishioners make use of these convenient envelopes to facilitate our work here in the office. If on occasion, you do forget your envelope, please do one of the following: (1) Use the red and white envelope in the pew, being sure to write out your full name and address on the front of the envelope. Put your check or cash inside and drop it into the collection basket; or (2) You may also put a “loose check” (no envelope) in the basket provided that your checks have your name and address on them. St. Matthew cannot give credit or verification of donations made with “loose cash,” that is, cash which is not in a clearly marked envelope. Full name and address are important because of the large numbers of parishioners with similar names. We at St. Matthew are grateful for the generosity of our members. In addition, we would like to be of assistance to you when tax season comes around by providing you with an accurate accounting of your sacrificial giving. In order to accomplish this, we are in great need of your help in the ways outlined above. May God bless you for your continued support of our parish. Thank you very much.
