FROM THE PASTOR'S DESK

Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

You were buried with him in baptism, in Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain wisdom of heart.

-- Psalm 90:12

o not have to work, to rest, eat, drink and live carefree is a tempting lifestyle. Why not? Sometimes work seems like drudgery, ministry can be demanding, and the idea of having financial security seems infinitely appealing. In today’s Gospel from Luke 12:13-21, we easily identify with the rich man who fulfilled that captivating dream of security and freedom from toil. He is hardworking, prudent and successful. He has not only earned enough to support his current needs but by storing his surplus crop he giddily anticipates ensuring his freedom for years to come! It reminds me of the commercial where people carry around a “number” summarizing their net worth; the commercial asks, “do you know your number?” meaning the number you need to retire comfortably? The rich man finally hit his “number”, but things soon sour.

Everything is going right for the rich man until the most important thing goes terribly wrong. He hears the stunning words: ‘You fool, this night your life will be demanded of you; and the things you have prepared, to whom will they belong?” [Luke 12:20] So what is the gospel telling us?

Certainly not to avoid industry or prudence. Certainly to avoid hoarding and the illusion that worldly wealth can purchase security in life. This parable reveals that despite our careful planning, we are not in control of our lives. What good is reaching our “number” if we are not given the gift of life to enjoy the fruits of our toil? So we are left with the challenge of putting our trust in God and not in the material things that we love to accumulate. We wonder, “what else could the industrious farmer have done?” He could have shared his excess crop with the hungry and needy. Today we ask ourselves: what do we place our trust in? Do we blindly toil over reaching that magical financial “number” that will grant us the security that the rich man sought? Can we risk being generous and sharing what we have now and thus store riches in heaven that moths cannot corrupt and rust cannot erode? Let us place our trust in the Lord!

HOLYDAYS OF OBLIGATION
A reminder: We have five holydays in the United States:

Mary Mother of God: January 1st
Assumption: August 15th
All Saints: November 1st
Immaculate Conception: December 8th
Nativity of Jesus (Christmas): December 25th

Both the Immaculate Conception and Nativity of Jesus ALWAYS ARE HOLYDAYS OF OBLIGATION, regardless on what day they fall. The other three, when they are on either a Saturday or a Monday, the obligation is abrogated. Those of us who recall having six holydays which included the Ascension know that the TX bishops have moved this solemnity to the 7th Sunday of Easter. Questions, call Fr. Dennis.
